Resources for learning German

A curated selection of courses, video series and learning tools that complement the material on My German dictionary. The notes below explain what each resource offers and how I would use it.

Recommended starting points

It is usually better to follow one main course consistently than to start many courses at the same time. Choose one resource as your foundation and use the others for additional listening, reading or explanations.

Nico's Weg

A1–B1 · Video course · Free
Deutsche Welle

A structured video course following Nico through everyday situations in Germany. The story, exercises and gradual progression make it suitable as a primary learning resource.

My take: One of the best free starting points for beginners. Learn a small amount of grammar first, then work through the levels in order. Save useful words and sentences from the episodes in your own lessons.

Extra auf Deutsch

A2–B1 · Video series · Listening practice
Educational television series

An educational sitcom created for language learners. Recurring characters and everyday situations make the dialogue easier to follow than most native television.

My take: A good bridge between structured courses and native content. Watch an episode once for the story, then return to it with German subtitles and collect only the expressions you genuinely want to remember.

DW Learn German

Multiple levels · Courses and exercises · Free
Deutsche Welle

Deutsche Welle's main collection of German-learning courses, videos, audio materials and exercises for learners at different levels.

My take: Treat this as a resource library rather than trying to complete everything. Choose one main course and add only the material that supports your current level and goals.

Stories, phrases and listening

These resources help you move beyond isolated exercises and hear German used in connected speech.

Das sagt man so

B2 · Idioms · Short episodes
Deutsche Welle

Short pieces built around German sayings and frequently used expressions.

My take: Useful when literal translations stop being enough. Save the complete expression and an example sentence rather than learning only one isolated word.

Ticket nach Berlin

B1–B2 · Video series · Travel
Deutsche Welle

A travel competition in which German learners complete tasks while visiting different parts of Germany.

My take: The participants are learners, so their German is not always perfect. That can be encouraging and provides realistic listening practice alongside native speakers.

Jojo sucht das Glück

B1–B2 · Video series · Drama
Deutsche Welle

A fictional series for intermediate learners following Jojo and her life in Germany.

My take: The format will not appeal to everyone, but it offers longer connected dialogue and recurring vocabulary. Try one episode before deciding whether to follow the complete series.

Daily practice and resource discovery

Useful supplements for building a routine or finding material that better fits your needs.

Duolingo

Beginner · Interactive exercises · Freemium
Duolingo

Short interactive exercises designed to make regular language practice easy to fit into a daily routine.

My take: Useful for consistency and beginner vocabulary, but do not make it your only source. Combine it with grammar study, listening and complete German texts.

All Language Resources

Reviews · Comparisons · Resource lists
Independent resource directory

Reviews and comparisons of language-learning tools, courses and study methods.

My take: Helpful when looking for alternatives, but choose resources according to your own goals. A highly rated tool is not automatically the best fit for every learner.

Turn watching and reading into active study

  1. 1

Watch or read once for general meaning

Do not interrupt every sentence. First understand the situation and main ideas.

  2. 2

Return with German text or subtitles

Connect what you hear with written German and identify useful expressions.

  3. 3

    Create a manageable personal lesson

Use a short section rather than an entire film or long article, and follow the copyright rules that apply to the source material.

  4. 4

    Save useful vocabulary

Prioritize repeated expressions and words relevant to your communication goals.

  5. 5

Practice and revisit the original content

Check whether the passage becomes easier after you review its vocabulary.

Use external content in your own lessons
