37. Ein Nachmittag in Ulm

  Ich habe meinen alten Freund in Ulm besucht.
I have visited my old friend in Ulm.

Ulm is an old city that was founded over a thousand years ago.

Here we can see the Plusquamperfekt. Notice the "haben" in Preterit and part participle at the end of the sentence.
What is this "wurde"? It is passive in the simple past tense. We haven't talked about passive so far. The main idea of passive is that you can construct sentences in which the subject is not present. So, the city of Ulm was founded over a thousand years ago, but we are not saying by whom.
This is another topic we didn't talk about. This is Subjunctive. Remember the verb "möchten"? At the very start of this course, it was said that this is a Subjunctive of the verb "mögen", but it is so widely used that it is treated almost as a standalone verb. Well, "hätten" is the Subjunctive of the verb "haben".
This is the Plusquamprefekt. Notice how in the Subjunctive it is "hätten" and in the Indicative it is "hatten" without the umlaut. One of the indications that the Subjunctive is used is the presence of the umlaut.
höchste is the superlative of the adjective hoch (high). So, "höchste" means "the highest". The comparative of "hoch" is höher (higher).
ältestes is the superlative of the adjective alt (old). So, "ältestes" means "the oldest". The comparative of "alt" is älter (older).
This is genitive. When a feminine noun is used, the definite article is der.
